Around the Wallowa Lake area, you can enjoy hiking wilderness trails, horseback riding, bumper boats, canoeing, miniature golf or ride a tramway to the top of one of the mountains (a rise of 4,000'). Wildlife is abundant in the area (check out our downloadable bird list (564k); Acrobat required).

Eagle Cap Excursion Train

The Eagle Cap Excursion Train is a scenic train that operates on a 63 mile long railroad, linking the communities of Elgin, Wallowa, Enterprise and Joseph in Northeast Oregon. Along the way, the track passes through spectacular roadless areas as it follows the Wild & Scenic Grande Ronde River down stream, then turns up the Wallowa River and across the beautiful Wallowa Valley to the base of the towering Wallowa Mountains. The track, historically known as the Joseph Branch, is owned by the governments of Wallowa and Union Counties and operated by the Wallowa Union Railroad Authority, which also operates rail freight service on the track.

Hell's Canyon Scenic Byway

Journey from river’s edge to mountaintop and down to valley floor. Have lunch overlooking a wild and scenic river; share a canyon road with a cattle drive. Pass through lush valleys, rimmed by the snow-tipped Wallowa Mountains. Savor the scent of pine on the fresh mountain air. Enjoy panoramic views of rugged basalt cliffs and grassy open ridges. Stand next to the majestic Snake River as it begins its tumbling course through North America's deepest canyon. Place your hand in the weathered track of a wagon wheel; hear the wind rushing through the forest. You are surrounded by the music of birds and bubbling streams

Eagle Cap Wilderness

Cove is the western gateway to the stunning Eagle Cap Wilderness. Visitors wishing to access the wilderness through the popular Moss Springs Trailhead can only get there by traveling through Cove.

The Eagle Cap Wilderness is nestled in the heart of the majestic Wallowa Mountains, which rise to peaks of over 10,000 feet. The wilderness encompasses 360,000 acres of high alpine lakes and meadows, granite-faced mountains, glaciated valleys, and pristine rivers and streams. There are over 500 miles of hiking and riding trails in the wilderness maintained by the National Forest Service.

Cove, Oregon our closest neighbor

Cove is located on the eastern edge of the Grande Ronde Valley in Union County, Oregon. The town is on the valley upslope, nestled between the nearby Wallowa Mountains and adjacent ridges. It derives its name from its unique setting and in earlier days was called Forest Cove. Mt. Fanny, a 7,400 ft. peak in the Wallowa range, dominates the town view to the east. The Blue Mountains and the City of La Grande, the county seat, lie some 16 miles to the west of Cove, across a fertile agricultural valley and the meandering Grande Ronde River.

Cove is a small community with approximately 680 people living within the city limits. The city is governed by an elected mayor and city council. The greater Cove area has another 1,200 people. The majority of employed residents work outside the community. The city has a public library, K-12 public schools, a volunteer fire department, and a small cluster of stores and restaurants in the downtown area. It is also home to several businesses and institutions of regional note. These include the historic Cove Warm Springs Swimming Pool, Artesian Blue Water Company, Gilstrap Brothers Winery, the Cove Christian Camp, and the Ascension School Camp and Conference Center. The Episcopal church and bishop’s residence adjoining the Ascension School grounds are in the national registry of historic buildings.

Cove has been a fruit production center for over 100 years. Today, there are approximately 500 acres of commercial orchards, planted to sweet cherries, on the hillsides above the town. Livestock production, wheat, mint, and a variety of other crops make up the remaining farm operations.

Close proximity to the Moss Springs Trail head, located 7 miles east of town, make Cove a convenient recreational gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Wallowa National Forest, for both local citizens and out of town visitors.

Okay Bossman, the Boys is getting reztliss!

The boys are asking all sort o questions about physical labor and hard work and the such and can't even be waiting to be on the road and hunkering down for some goodtimes.

Coursen' they're trying to figure out which is the bunkhouse from dis hear fancy-ass saddelite photygraph you dun giv em, but it's hard to say, I tell ya.

Sure as shit looks like High Valley Road to me but I'm thinking I might be better off playing pin the tail on the jackass than put the pushpin on the bunkhouse.

come-on . . . .
